Food Bank Restocking in November
Posted October 25, 2013

Thanks to the giving hearts in our community, Our Daily Bread has been able to supply the hungry of Whitney, Aquilla, and Blum with emergency food assistance.

The goal for this year's Food for Families drive is 85,000 pounds, the same as in 2012. Monetary donations will translate into 5 lbs for every $2. The area continues to see high unemployment and spiraling food costs.

Donations can be dropped off during the month of November at area churches, including White Bluff Chapel. Monetary contributions can be mailed to Our Daily Bread, PO Box 1502, Whitney TX 76692.

This year the annual Food For Families food drive will be held on November 22 at the Whitney Church of Christ. Volunteers are needed to act as "assistant directors" during the day at the church. Duties would include managing the rotation of boxes as they are marked and filled, checking for accurate packing before sending to the food bank and calling Channel 10 to let them know our progress during the day. Please call Diana VanWagner at 694-1372 to volunteer or for more information.

The privately-owned home boasts a unique history and architecture. The site was an 1838 Headright Land Grant awarded to the widow Mary Beacham. The original 1860's cabin was incorporated into the current structure and now functions as the home's elegant dining room. The grounds still contain servants' quarters, a carriage house, an outhouse and a natural stone building that may have functioned as a garçonnière, or boys' dormitory.

The dedication ceremony will be held on the front lawn of the homestead and will feature a color guard from the Sons of the American Revolution Chapters in Fort Worth and Granbury, wearing authentic Revolutionary War costumes, as well as bagpiper Bill Herridge.

Help Improve AT&T Cell Coverage in WB
Posted September 6, 2013

The AT&T network team is evaluating Whitney for a future tower site. They are also considering small cell technology as an alternative for the area.

In order to encourage AT&T to upgrade service at White Bluff, AT&T requests users to download the "Mark the Spot" app on their phones and use the app to report dropped calls as they occur. Information about the Mark The Spot app can be found at this link.

In the meantime, AT&T suggests using a 3G MicroCell to boost indoor coverage. The 3G MicroCell only requires a high speed internet connection in your home. If indoor coverage is your primary concern, click on this link to information about the MicroCell.

WB Author Releases Second Novel

White Bluff and Dallas resident, Leonard Critcher, has announced the release of his second novel, Crossing The Line.  This fast moving and highly sensual book picks up where the highly acclaimed Drawing The Line stopped, leaving readers anxiously awaiting for what will happen next to the splendid cast of characters.

Crossing The Line tracks the meteoric ascent of Chris Carter from the campus of Centenary College to Harvard Law School and back to Shreveport, where he joins the city's most prestigious law firm.  While at Centenary he is admitted into a clandestine fraternity inner council that is a microcosm of much larger forces that secretly control the country's business and professional worlds and the politics that answer to them.

His innate and developed skills, combined with his learned propensity for doing whatever is necessary to win, prove invaluable as he becomes embroiled in a medical malpractice lawsuit.  Enhanced by the unknown forces he becomes a part of, it takes a combination of every skill in his possession to meet head-on the power of the medical establishments in north Louisiana and Atlanta as well as one of the richest corporations in the world.

Crossing The Line is available in hardback, paperback and e-book format.  Signed copies can be ordered at the author's website.

Update on Air Evacuation Service at WB
Posted March 21, 2013

In case of a medical emergency within WB, if it is determined that a helicopter transport is needed, the fastest available helicopter service will be called.  Both CareFlite and Air-Evac helicopters are close enough to be at the scene within 15-20 minutes of the call; Air-Evac provides the majority of air responses within White Bluff.

ESD#2 now pays for membership in both Air Evac and Care Flite air service for all White Bluff residents. It is not necessary for anyone who lives in White Bluff to join either of these services.

All WB residents are covered by CareFlite anywhere CareFlite operates. Air Evac however limits their coverage to Hill County and any contiguous county. WB residents can purchase annual coverage for $35 per household from Air Evac that will cover them anywhere Air Evac operates, which currently is in 26 states.

For more information on Air Evac, call 800-793-0010 or go to www.lifeteam.net. For more information on Care Flite, call 877-339-2273 or go to www.careflite.org

The Lake Whitney Garden Club is chartering a bus for a trip to see the Hill Country Bluebonnets on Thursday, April 11, and would like to extend an invitation to ladies in White Bluff to join them. They will leave downtown Whitney at 7 am that morning. They will stop at a yard art store, have lunch at the Bluebonnet Café in Marble Falls (extra cost), and tour the Willow City Loop outside Fredricksburg, which always has the most scenic wildflowers. They will also stop at Wildseed Farm before returning home that day.

The cost for the bus, including tip for the driver Gerald, whom they have used before, is $52 per person. They have a few seats still available on a first paid basis. Contact Carolyn Williams at 694-9680 for more information.

Weather Updates
Posted January 11, 2013

Recently, you may have gone to WhiteBluffNow and not been able to get up-to-date Weather Underground information (in the upper right of the home page). This site gets its data from a weather station within White Bluff run by Mike Hicks, and that system had been having intermittent problems. The issues have now been resolved and you should see consistent results now.
